Recession's Silver Lining? Increased Adaptability

Madbury, N.H. - Nov. 9

Senior executives and managers say the people they work with are more adaptable today than a few years ago.

More than half (57 percent) of business leaders say the people they work with in their department or organization are more adaptable.

Senior executives and managers also say their coworkers are more knowledgeable (50 percent) and more productive (44 percent) compared to a few years ago.

"Many in business today have had no choice but to become more adaptable considering the impact of economic conditions on business," said Chuck Martin, CEO of NFI Research and author of SMARTS (Are We Hardwired for Success?).

Sixty-three percent of senior executives say their coworkers are more adaptable compared to 48 percent of managers.

"Fortunately, over the last 10 years as new technology has been introduced, our employees have become more adaptable since realizing the benefits and efficiencies that technology has brought to their work," says one respondent. “They're more confident, which has positively affected the overall culture."

Of those in small businesses (500 or fewer employees), 30 percent say their coworkers are more somber compared to almost double (57 percent) of those working in large companies.

Ninety percent of senior executives and managers did not say their coworkers are more happy compared to a few years ago.

Based on the survey of 135 executives and managers, the characteristics that the fewest business leaders used to describe coworkers compared to a few years ago are lazy (6 percent), mean (9 percent) or outgoing (10 percent).

NFI Research surveys senior executives and managers globally every two weeks. NFI's Chairman and CEO Chuck Martin is the author of seven business books and teaches marketing research and social media in marketing at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire.
