Millennials will use Web 2.0 applications on the job whether they are allowed to or not, according to a study in CIO magazine by antivirus and security software vendor Symantec. (You can find it here: http://www.cio.com/article/328964/Younger_Workers_More_Likely_to_Break_Corporate_Rules_for_Web_Apps) Half of the 600 respondents surveyed in the study have policies banning Web 2.0 tools, and 69 percent of the Millennial respondents said they will use whatever technology they want regardless of such policies.
Lastly, the study found that employees save an average of five to six hours per week using these technologies, which basically means that Web 2.0 applications are making workers more productive. If this is indeed true, that’s the business case for Web 2.0 that we should be making to the C-suite.
This technology perpetuates learning on-the-spot, but for some reason we are still dragging our feet. Facebook itself was launched in February of 2004. Four years later, how many companies are embracing it? How many companies are still banning it? As technology becomes more pervasive in the future, those who are resistant to change may remain so and those who are malleable will see the advantages in dollars and cents.
